One of the first questions that comes to my mind before I get in front of the camera is always, what do I wear?! So trust me, I know it can feel a little daunting to find the perfect looks for your engagement session outfit, but have no fear, in this post I’m going to walk you through finding the perfect pieces that photograph well and will have you looking absolutely gorgeous on the day of your session!
It is so important that you show up to your engagement session feeling comfortable and looking your best. You are investing a lot of money into your wedding photographer, or just an engagement session, so it should be a no brainer to you to invest in preparing for your session well. This includes your outfits, your hair and makeup, and overall just how you’re feeling beforehand. Spend some time together and pampering yourself! These are photos that you will share for a lifetime and photos that your kids and grandkids will look back at and think, wow, they were so in love and looked stunning! While yes, maybe you do spend everyday in a t-shirt and jeans, that’s an easy outfit to grab quick pictures of anytime. This is an experience with a professional photographer. Our job is to capture you in your best light, happy and in love, but you know what they say… it takes two to tango. Your photos can only look as beautiful as the effort you’re willing to put into them an honestly, your outfits can make or break your session.
#1 Be Comfortable
By this, I mean be comfortable in your choices (not so much comfy as in sweats lol). If you don’t like fitted clothing (super tight dresses or pieces that fit awkwardly) then leave them at home. If there are items you chose that make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, don’t include them in your engagement session wardrobe. During your session, you will most likely be sitting on the ground, walking, frolicking around and doing other things at some point, so be sure you are feeling confident in your outfit pieces!
#2 Colors & Neutrals
When choosing outfits for your session, try to choose colors that compliment your hair + skin colors! Royal blue, light blue, pinks, emerald green, jewel tones, and pastels all photograph beautifully! When pairing the two outfits together as a couple, choose colors that complement each other well and aren’t completely matchy-matchy. If one person is wearing lighter colors, maybe the other has a pop of color or darker pants to balance the looks out. Try to mix in some neutral pieces as well. We can spice these up with layers or accessories, but sometimes locations can have a lot going on in the background, so having some neutral pieces allows us to focus on you and your boo while providing a canvas for a nice, clean photograph!
#3 Add Layers
One way to spice up your outfit and create more diversity is to add layers! In the fall and winter, spice up a sweater with a vest and statement necklace or scarf. In the spring and summer you can add layers with a denim or leather jacket with a dress or skirt! Keep you mind open how many different fits you can create with a few staple pieces.
#4 Textures
Another great thing to think about when choosing outfits is to think about textures. Our professional cameras are made to capture detail, so adding in different textures like linen, cable knit sweater, even things like ruffles or eyelet dresses and tops will elevate your photos and look stunning! So, instead of wearing matching t-shirts with a giant design on it, switch to a tank top with eyelet details and white jeans for the gal and and button down shirt and khakis for the guy. One other thing to keep in mind are small patterns and prints. Sometimes, the way our lens capture an image, if the print is super fine and tiny (like fine pin stripes) your image may have whats called chromatic aberration, and that can be hard to edit out. So just keep that in mind as well, but it really just depends.
I hope these tips have helped you today think about some different engagement session outfit options! I’ve seen what looks great on camera, and hat hasn’t looked so great, so trust me on these tips. Take the advice your photographer gives you, they’ve probably been around the block a few times. 😉
