Hey girl heyyyy! If you’re here reading this, you’re probably wondering what to wear for your senior session! And that is A-OK. I know that it can be tough to decide on the outfits that will be captured in your senior portraits for all of your #seniorsunday posts, but in this post I’m going to walk you through some of my top tips for how to pick out outfits for your session. To be quite honest, your outfit can actually make or break the way your session turns out, but that’s why I’m here to help you out girl. So, let’s jump right in!
#1 Be Comfortable!
If you do not like fitted clothing (super tight dresses or pieces that fit awkwardly) then leave them at home! If there are pieces in your closet that make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, don’t include them in your senior portrait outfit choices! We will most likely be sitting on the ground, laying down, walking and doing other things so be sure you are feeling confident in your outfit pieces! When I say comfortable, I don’t mean sweats and a hoodie, I mean you’re feeling GOOD in your outfit. You can move around, you feel confident, and you know you love the pieces.
#2 Add Layers!
In the fall + winter, adding layers to your outfits always looks so cozy and cute in portraits! A sweater paired with a vest or scarf or even a leather jack and a hat adds so much dimension to your images. The additional layers also help us to add some different, super fun poses! In the spring + summer you can add layers and dimension by wearing a tank top or dress with a denim jacket which is always SO cute!
#3 Colors + Neutrals!
When choosing outfits with colors for your senior session, try to choose colors that really pop and that compliment your skin tone! Royal blue, light blue, any pinks, emerald green and jewel tones, and any other colors that really pop always make for some really fun photographs! Try to mix in some neutral pieces as well. We can spice these up with layers or accessories. Sometimes locations can have a lot going on in the background, so having some neutral pieces allows us to focus on your gorgeous self! I also believe these are great when putting together your album, or when mom prints giant canvases for the wall. They’ll obviously blend in with any style or design being that they are neutral and not too stand out-ish!
#4 Textures!
Sometimes textures like eyelet, furs, ruffles can be considered “too much” sometimes, but, in portraits, they are the best! Adding texture to your outfit makes the biggest difference, and it prevents the images from looking dull or flat. My favorite textures in outfits for your senior portraits include eyelet, ruffles, bows, seersucker, sequins, linen, and velvet! A great Fredericksburg spot for these kinds of items is Monkee’s right downotwn!
#5 Accessorize! (duh!)
During a senior session, or any photo shoot, the more the merrier!! When planning your outfits, don’t forget to plan your accessories too!! I know they can easy to forget, but they do make a difference when it comes to spicing up your outfit. Think about items like scarves, hats, pretty heels, layered necklaces, multiple rings, dangle earrings, and other add-ons that can make or break an outfit.
